5.1. The story of the formation of Bãi Bụt and the tale of the Buddha statue washed ashore

The name Bãi Bụt is associated with a sacred legend. According to legend, during the reign of King Minh Mạng, fishermen discovered a Buddha statue drifting on the sandy beach. They built a small temple and reverently worshipped it. Since then, this area of the sea has been called Bãi Bụt (meaning "Buddha"), and the people believe that thanks to the Buddha's protection, the waves are calm, the sea is peaceful, and fishing is favorable. Later, a large pagoda was built on the site of the old temple, which is now Linh Ứng Bãi Bụt Pagoda.
